Is your monitor suitable for a wall mount?

This is the single most important question you should ask before you start perusing wall mount bracket models. Only VESA© compatible monitors can be mounted using third party brackets; others will require custom-stands and brackets made available by the manufacturer.

If you look on the back of the display, there are four holes drilled into the steel frame of the monitor; screws are threaded into these holes to secure the monitor to the wall. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) stipulates the measurements (vertical x horizontal distance) and the placement pattern of these four mounting holes. The VESA standard was enforced as an attempt to regularize measurements across various applications. Many of the leading television manufacturers adhere to the VESA Interface standard.

VESA 100 (100mm x 100mm) is the most commonly used size. However, mid and large-sized monitors weighing more require a higher VESA compliance for instance 200 x 100mm, 400 x 200mm, 600x 200mm etc. You can figure out the VESA compliance for your monitor by reading the product specifications.

Types of Monitor Wall Brackets

  1. Fixed Mount
The fixed mount is basic in its functionality. As the name suggests, it only allows one to mount and secure a screen to the wall. There is no scope to swivel or adjust the viewing angle of the monitor. Given its flat profile, it fixes the monitor as close as possible to the wall, so you won’t have the TV display jutting out. In terms of price, a fixed wall mount is the most budgeted option. It is also very easy to install.
If you opt for a fixed wall mount, it is important to ensure there is enough space to accommodate cables behind the television. Check the placement of the HDMI ports, whether they are on the rear or along the side. The positioning on the wall will also have to be done carefully – at the optimal viewing height.

  2. Tilting Wall Mounts
A titling wall mount allows you to adjust the vertical viewing angle using the pivot in the middle of the bracket. You can tilt the screen upwards or downwards depending on the level you are viewing it from. For instance, if you are sleeping on the floor, you can tilt the screen downwards. The same can be done if you plan to mount your television screen at a height higher than the optimal viewing angle. The degree of tilt varies from model to model. The ability to adjust the angle helps reduces reflection and glare from windows and light. The swivel feature also saves the trouble of having to physically remove the screen every time you need to replace a faulty cable. On the price scale, you will pay less for a titling wall mount than a full-motion wall mount but more than a fixed one. A titling wall mount is as easy to install as a fixed wall mount.

  3. Full-Motion Wall Mounts
Also called articulating and cantilever wall mounts, fixed wall mounts offer the highest level of flexibility and the best viewing angles. The range of movement depends on the model. Basic designs allow only for side-to-side swivel adjustments. Higher-end models feature a retractable arm that enables one to tilt and rotate the monitor in addition to moving it from left to right. It can also be pulled out or pushed back as required.A full motion wall mount is the perfect choice in a room with multiple viewing spots; especially where you won’t be sitting directly in front of the television when viewing it. It is ideal if you plan to install your television in a corner. As one of the most versatile options, it is also the most expensive. Nevertheless, it is worth the extra cost.

  4. Ceiling Mount
These brackets enable one to mount a monitor on the ceiling. It is ideal if you are restricted on space and do not have enough wall area to mount your monitor. Fixing a monitor on a ceiling mount can be challenging and is best left to a professional. It is better suited to homes made of brick walls as it needs the structural support. Ceiling mounts can also be tilted and rotated to adjust the viewing angle.

What is the optimal height for a wall mount?

After you choose the type of wall mount bracket you want, you need to decide the optimal height for your new screen. Here’s what you need to factor in.
To calculate the ideal distance and height, you will first need to know the size of your television.

Viewing distance
This is the distance between the wall on which you plan to mount your television and the spot you will view the screen from. The optimum viewing distance depends on the size of the television. There are two ways to calculate the ideal viewing distance in inches.
i. You can multiple the size of your television by 1.67.
ii. You can divide the size of your television by 0.55.

Eye level
This figure is calculated by measuring the distance from the level of the eye in a sitting position to the floor. The measurement for optimal height should be taken from the floor to the centre of the television. The centre of the screen should be in line with the eye of the viewer.

Viewing angle
The ideal viewing angle for monitors is not more than 30 degrees.

What are the advantages of a wall mount bracket?

  1. Ease of installation
Unlike what most people think, flat screens are very easy to install as they are designed to be mounted on a wall. The displays feature pre-made mounting holes complaint with the VESA Interface Standard. The standardization makes it very convenient to choose a third-party mount knowing that the unit will be compatible with the television size. The package also includes other hardware needed to secure your screen, safely.

  2. Space Saving
A flat screen on its own space-saving; wall mounting it only ensures that you save more space. In case of a monitor stand, you need a cabinet or a small chest of drawers to place it. By having your monitor wall-mounted, you can dispense with it clearing up floor space in your room. Alternately, if you retain the cabinet, you can put it to some other use.

  3. Uncluttered Look
We are all moving towards compact living spaces with minimalistic designs. You can give your room or your work space a very modern uncluttered look by choosing to mount the monitor on the wall. You can get rid of bulky furniture units that obstruct the way. You can also be free of unsightly wires and cords hanging around.

  4. Prevents Strain
The viewing distance, the viewing angle, the recline angle and the eye level are all taken into consideration when mounting a monitor on the wall. Thus, fitted at an optimal height, a wall mounted monitor can help reduce the strain on the neck and the eyes usually experienced by starting at a screen straight-on for long hours as is the case with stand-held monitors. With tilt and full motion brackets, you can further adjust the monitor to your comfort level.

  5. Keeps your television safe
Children are fascinated by electronics and love to finger them. The same can be said about pets who take a special joy in chewing and nibbling electrical cables and chords. Mounting a television keeps it out of the reach of children and pets ensuring they remain in good condition. This one is a minor advantage, but important to those who have pets and small kids around the house.
